John Mayer is a
professional
photographer based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. John is also a firefighter
and emergency
medical technician, serving as assistant chief of the Tesuque, NM
Volunteer
Fire District. In addition to fighting house fires, responding to
wrecks and
911 calls for heart attacks, other medical crises and the occasional
stranded
dog, he is also a member of the Santa Fe County Technical Rescue Team.
He and
his teammates have rescued people from cliff falls, hikes gone wrong
and even a wintry small
plane crash. John’s empathy for the people caught up in emotionally
charged
life dramas informs his capacity to see and capture the fleeting
moments of
joy, sadness, fear, wonder and laughter of his human photographic
subjects.
John’s passion for natural beauty has
also guided his journey as a photographer. Whether hiking the trails
around
Bandelier and Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monuments in his home
state of
New Mexico, winter skiing in Yellowstone National Park, or exploring
Ireland’s
magnificent southwest coast, John captures unusual juxtapositions of
wildlife
and landscape with his camera lenses. A three-year sojourn pulling an
Airstream
behind his pickup truck from Newfoundland to the deserts of southern
California
deepened John’s relationship to nature in many forms—and to people in
many
forms! While the solitude of hiking and cross-country skiing are
sources of
inspiration, John also enjoys assignments from adventurous New Mexico
visitors
to photograph their outings in New Mexico’s iconic landscapes.
